The Prisons Department is planning and implementing rehabilitation programmes based on the process of Desistance. Desistance in the context of criminology and the prison system refers to the process of an individual ceasing to engage in criminal behavior and gradually returning to a positive and socially accepted life. Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Ahmaddin bin Haji Abdul Rahman, Minister of Home Affairs, stated the matter at a Parade Commemorating the 72nd anniversary of the Prisons Department, 23rd May morning. It took place at the Parade Ground of the Prisons Department Training Centre in Tutong District.

Such efforts, according to Yang Berhormat, require continued commitment from all officers and members of the Prisons Department, in addition to continued support and cooperation from various government agencies, the private sector and non-governmental organisations through Whole of Government and Whole of Nation approaches, and most importantly, from family members.

Yang Berhormat said the Prisons Department in collaboration with the Ministry of Education has recently provided an opportunity for 32 local inmates to sit for the GCE 'O' Level examination. In efforts to empower rehabilitation programmes in terms of religious and spiritual, Yang Berhormat urged for the P{risons Department to review the incentive under the Al-Qur'an Memorisation Tasmie' Scheme to encourage a broader participation among local inmates aside from ensuring a more planned training plan and continuous guidance.

The ceremony was followed by the presentation of the Outstanding Employee Award and the presentation of the Brunei Prison Self Defence Badge.
